ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews reached 50% containment on the Route 13 Fire burning on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation after three separate blazes merged Tuesday to threaten Takini School and nearby homes—wind shifts and a Thursday flare up complicated efforts to contain the 37,685-acre blaze as extra crews arrived.  KBHB

CRIME NEWS

  • The remains of 21-year-old Sahela Sangrait, who went missing on August 10 and were found on March 4 south of Hill City by a hiker, are under homicide investigation—local, state and federal law enforcement agencies are working together on the case.  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Andrea Brickey from South Dakota Mines won the SME Ivan B. Rahn Education Award for her 30 years of work teaching mining engineering — she returned to teach in 2015 after a long career in mining. Alumni Dennis Bryan, David Hammond, and James Gebhardt were also named 2025 SME Fellows to honor their contributions to the industry.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Larry Rhoden on Tuesday signed 31 bills into law that require schools to accept cash at events, limit e-bike use on the Mickelson Trail to only Class I bikes, and make a recent 911 surcharge increase permanent. The governor has now signed 97 bills this session—introduced from over 500 proposals since January.  KBHB
  • Governor Larry Rhoden signed SB 216 to slow rising property taxes by capping owner-occupied assessments at 3% and limiting budget increases for new construction — he said he will propose further property tax cuts soon.  KBHB
