ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Rockerville fire units responded late Saturday to a wildfire off Beretta Road that burned under 2 acres (one tree snagged) and was contained with help from Battle Creek, state, and USFS crews while they continue to monitor the area amid dry conditions. KBHB
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ United States Airman Quinterius Charles Chappelle appeared in court today — he faces charges of second-degree murder for the alleged killing of an Indigenous woman on base. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ The South Dakota Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Spearfish man Dreau Lester Rogers for second-degree murder—he fatally shot his wife Destiny in their home on January 22, 2022, despite his claim that another man pulled the trigger. KBHB
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Average gas prices dropped 9.3 cents over the last week and are now $2.86 per gallon in South Dakota, based on GasBuddy’s survey of 628 stations. Prices are 10.8 cents lower than a month ago and 32.3 cents lower than a year ago — experts warn that low demand from a slow economy may keep prices low. KBHB
- ➤ The state Department of Labor report released Friday showed South Dakota’s unemployment rate stayed at 1.9 percent in January while the workforce grew to 491,500, with added jobs in construction, healthcare, and leisure and hospitality. The report noted that available workers—about 45,070 statewide—remain scarce despite overall job growth. KBHB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, Meade School District has launched a matching program for lunch debt payments thanks to an anonymous $115,000 donation—invested in the Meade School District Meal Support Fund through Black Hills Area Community Foundation. The district received an initial $15,000 grant from the Fund to reduce a current unpaid meals balance of $23,000—benefiting at least 200 students daily who do not qualify for free meals. KBHB
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City firefighters rescued a young mountain lion stuck in a neighborhood tree over the weekend. Crews tranquilized the animal with Game, Fish and Parks and relocated it back into the Black Hills. KBHB
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ South Dakota State guard Paige Meyer led her team with 26 points and 9 assists in a Summit League championship win over Oral Roberts that secured a third NCAA Tournament berth for the 24-ranked Jackrabbits. The team will face Oklahoma State on Saturday in Storrs—Meyer's strong scoring in the last nine games and three tournament trips make her a key leader ahead of March Madness. KBHB
