CRIME NEWS

  • Lloyd Big Crow, 44, a community advocate, was given a 30-day suspended sentence and fined $196 for blocking traffic during a 2023 prayer walk for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women—he said he will file an appeal while continuing his support for the community.  Rapid City Journal
  • A Rapid City teen charged with assault and discharging a firearm at a motor vehicle asked for a lower bond during court but his request to reduce it to $1,000 was denied+ his bond remains at $250,000+ with him and his co-defendant set to return to court on April 29.  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rapid City Area Schools Board of Education voted 6-1 on Tuesday to hire Jami Jo Thompson as the new superintendent, replacing acting leader Cory Strasser. Thompson—formerly superintendent in Norfolk, Nebraska—said she and her husband have visited Rapid City often and are ready to lead the second-largest district in the state.  KBHB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A federal report shows that wildfire risks are rising in South Dakota—communities near wildlands such as Rapid City, Custer, and Spearfish now face higher danger due to dry weather and dense forests. The report advises local residents to take fire prevention steps as longer wildfire seasons put property and safety at risk.  KBHB
  • Rapid City firefighters rescued a young mountain lion from a tree on Sunday morning.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson visited the Veterans Club in Sturgis Wednesday to honor 15 Vietnam era veterans with lapel pins, commemorative coins and certificates of appreciation—each veteran introduced himself before a crowd of over 100, including U.S. Air Force veteran Donald Stover from Rapid City. Johnson has pinned over 1,000 vets statewide and said his mission is to give them the welcome home they deserve.  KBHB
