Good morning, Rapid City. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of March.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A prescribed fire is planned southwest of Rapid City today to reduce overgrown vegetation and protect local communities and natural resources from wildfires. Officials say the controlled burn will lessen the risk to infrastructure during dry conditions.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USDA’s mandated EID ear tags rule is still in legal dispute after a change in government legal representation delayed the process — ranchers have incurred extra costs from buying the new tags. R-CALF USA filed an amended complaint and lawmakers including Senator Mike Rounds and Congresswoman Harriet Hageman are pushing legislation to block the mandate — the outcome remains uncertain.  KBHB
  • Governor Larry Rhoden signed 20 election-related bills into law yesterday as the 100th legislative session ended in Pierre, and two of these laws redefine residency and federal ballot voting requirements. He also vetoed House Bill 11-69 that would have required ballot measure petitions to secure five percent signatures from each senate district.  KBHB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bird flu has led to 114 commercial outbreaks and 26 backyard infections in South Dakota, causing the loss or euthanasia of over 6 million birds and major impacts on Hutterite turkey farms. Experts warn the virus could mutate — making a human outbreak possible — but so far no human cases have been reported in the state.  Rapid City Journal
