CULTURE NEWS

  • South Dakota Mines will host its 64th annual Cultural Expo tomorrow, March 28, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Surbeck Center's Beck Ballroom (showcasing diverse cultural traditions) for community members.  Rapid City Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Viewing blinds at Buffalo Gap National Grassland will open for public use April 1 to let visitors watch courtship dances by sharp-tailed grouse and greater prairie chicken. Wildlife technicians advise arriving one hour before sunrise to avoid disturbing the birds.  Native Sun News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment approved local intervenors' request to move the final uranium exploration hearing (April 13–17) from Pierre to Hot Springs and extend it to five days, allowing Lakota language services and more local participation to protect Craven Canyon's historic landscape.  Native Sun News
  • U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz and Great Sioux Nation tribal leaders signed an MOU for co-stewardship of Black Elk Wilderness in Mystic, South Dakota — a historic step that lays groundwork for joint efforts in recreation, habitat improvement and cultural site management across multiple Sioux tribes.  Native Sun News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The South Dakota Department of Health reports a new flu death, bringing the season's total to 25 and adding 649 new cases and 15 hospitalizations. County updates include Meade (410 cases, 1 death), Pennington (1,655 cases, 2 deaths) and Lawrence (225 cases, no flu deaths); handwashing and vaccines are advised.  KBHB

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, the Black Hills State University men’s basketball team fell to Nova Southeastern by a score of 76-66 at Pittsburgh’s UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, ending their season. The backcourt duo of BJ Woodruff, who scored a career-high 19 points, and Jaeton Hackley kept the nation’s top offense in check.  KBHB
