CRIME NEWS

  • The Rapid City Police Department is searching for 11-year-old Mariah Beck, who was last seen at 9 p.m. on the 4300 block of Wonderland Drive wearing a gold Rapid City Christian sweatshirt and dark pants—she may have been riding a black mountain bike marked 'Ironhorse.'  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Dakota school districts are hiring more international educators to ease teacher shortages—Crow Creek Tribal School in Stephan now employs 22 certified teachers from the Philippines while state records show 446 active international teaching certificates. This trend offers experienced instructors to fill classroom gaps where local shortages have long been a challenge.  KBHB
  • Documents released by the U.S. Department of Education show that former superintendent Nicole Swigart made disparaging remarks on Dec. 15 about Native families not valuing education and said that Native students follow Indian Time—remarks noted in the OCR investigation into district discipline practices. She denies making those comments and said the transcript reflects an interviewer's summary while the school board voted 6—1 to terminate her on Aug. 13th.  Rapid City Journal

  • Rapid City is working on 13 capital improvement projects—costing nearly $50 million—and repairing St. Joseph Street at Halley Park.  Rapid City Journal
  • Governor Rhoden visited the Rapid City Post office today at 1:30 p.m. to record an episode of Dakota Town Hall where he discussed his new appointment, toured the office, and named Lt. Governor Tony Venhuizen. He explained that he vetoed a childcare bill for hurting low-income people, said he would make constitutional changes harder, noted workforce shortages as a barrier to growth, & said he and his wife are still weighing a possible 2026 run.  KBHB

  • On Thursday, Rapid City's West River Preview meet opened the South Dakota 2025 Track and Field Season, where local athletes won sprints, hurdles, and field events—setting the stage for upcoming competitions.  KBHB
