CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An airman from Ellsworth AFB pleaded not guilty in federal court on Friday to killing Sahela Sangrait whose remains were found south of Hill City; the murder happened last August and Chappelle (who had a domestic assault record) may face the death penalty or life in prison if convicted. KBHB
- ➤ A driver who led a vehicle chase in Meade County escaped on foot+ police are now searching for the suspect. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ Thirty-year-old Derrek Brave Heart was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter for fatally shooting 43-year-old Jonathan Odom outside a Family Dollar store in February 2024—he claimed self-defense, but prosecutors said he escalated the conflict and he will be sentenced on May 5. KBHB
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, the South Dakota Mines Cultural Expo at the Surbeck Center drew 600 people who ate foods from many countries, listened to music, and watched dance shows; the event—running since 1963—gave students a chance to share their culture with the community. Rapid City Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Since the Legislature changed the rules in 2014, lawmakers have been withdrawing bills more often to avoid committee hearings—2024 saw 38 withdrawals while 2025 has had 30 so far from over 500 bills each session; Rep. Phil Jensen and Sen. Sue Peterson said many withdrawals occurred because the bills were flawed or unnecessary. KELOLAND
- ➤ Rapid City Council set ballot positions for the June 3 election—voters will cast their ballots to choose new council members. Rapid City Journal

- ➤ The South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association announced the 2025 All-State Girls Basketball Teams for Classes AA, A and B—AA Player of the Year is Alyvia Padgett, Class A Player of the Year is Ashlyn Koupal and B Player of the Year is Liz Boschee; repeat selections include several returning stars. - ➤ Today, Black Hills State lost two baseball games against Colorado School of Mines—falling 4-2 in the first and 10-7 in extra innings in the second—extending the Yellow Jackets' losing streak to six games. Laci Peskey and Paige Goodell had strong outings, but the team could not overcome slim leads. KBHB
