EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rapid City Area School District said the Office for Civil Rights ended its Voluntary Resolution Agreement on Title VI regarding discipline, truancy and advanced learning for Native American students. The district sent letters to parents today and will adjust its policies to follow the directive—ensuring fair procedures and compliance with federal law.  KBHB
  • The South Dakota Board of Regents announced a 2.9% tuition increase will apply to nearly all public universities in the upcoming academic year—effective from the 2025 summer term to the 2026 spring term—with South Dakota Mines set for a 5% rise. The change is designed to address rising operational costs and inflation while keeping college affordable.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennington County Planning and Zoning Department proposed a temporary pause on data center development to study the issue and develop clear regulations—officials said the move is not to block future projects. They will revisit the topic at the Board of Commissioners meeting on April 15.  KBHB
  • Rapid City Police Department celebrated the retirement of K9 Officer Max on Thursday as dozens of colleagues applauded his service—marking the end of a long and dedicated career.  Rapid City Journal
  • On March 27, Rapid City removed a mattress, debris and trash from a drainage culvert on Cheyenne Boulevard as part of efforts to address illegal homeless encampments that pose public health and safety risks. City officials and several agencies worked together on the cleanup — they plan to continue similar actions as warmer weather arrives.  Rapid City Journal
