- ➤ Jesse Fonkert, deputy commissioner with the GOED, has been named president and CEO of South Dakota Trade and will take over on April 21—he succeeds Luke Lindberg, who is leaving for a federal role. Fonkert, who led the Sioux Metro Growth Alliance and holds a degree in international affairs, aims to boost trade for small and medium businesses—Gov. Larry Rhoden praised the smooth leadership transition. KBHB

- ➤ The Williams family of Wall was named FFA Family of the Year by the South Dakota FFA Foundation at the State FFA Convention in Brookings. The award recognized over fifty years of support and three generations of involvement in FFA—showing their deep commitment—and they are set to continue promoting agriculture locally. KBHB
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Summit Carbon Solutions sued hundreds of South Dakota landowners to force their participation in a nearly $9 billion carbon pipeline project planned to cross five Midwest states. In early March, the governor signed a law banning eminent domain for carbon pipelines—casting doubt on the project’s future. Rapid City Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City officials reported in March that 206 building permits were issued with a combined valuation of more than $17.8 million, and a total of 496 permits in the first quarter exceed $57.8 million. Community Development Director Vicki Fisher said lower totals compared to recent years—driven by high interest rates and rising material costs—are expected to rebound soon. KBHB
