CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City’s Journey Museum merged with the Black Hills Historical Society in June 2025 to streamline operations and boost its endowment — an anonymous donor provided $500,000 and pledged an extra $1 million if an additional $500,000 is raised. KBHB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City school district officials have put a new bond measure on the ballot to fund school improvements (it comes six years after a higher-priced bond was rejected in 2020). Rapid City Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Rhoden announced the launch of the South Dakota Defense Institute with $5 million and an additional $1 million for a collaborative space in Rapid City's Innovation District yesterday. The institute will join industry, education + state agencies to drive national defense opportunities. KBHB
- ➤ Black Hills Energy has asked the Public Utility Commission to keep confidential its plan to supply power to CRSE Properties for a blockchain data center in Rapid City. Staff requested data on March 25 and will decide on the request later + more details are pending. KBHB
- ➤ South Dakota ranks second nationally for overall tax competitiveness and first for both corporate and individual taxes due to no income, estate and inheritance taxes. A Tax Foundation report also notes that the state’s tax system is regressive for lower-income households. South Dakota News Watch
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ WalletHub released its report on children’s health care, ranking South Dakota 34th among 50 states and D.C. using 33 key factors (including rates of good child health and the number of pediatricians) ahead of Every Kid Healthy Week starting April 20. KBHB
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ South Dakota Mines Golf delivered one of its best performances on Monday at the Augustana Spring Invite in Sioux Falls, where the men's team finished third and the women's team finished fifth. The team’s strong showing could boost its season momentum. KBHB
- ➤ Tuesday boys tennis teams from St Thomas More and Stevens won matches; the Cavaliers beat Rapid City Central 8+1 and Stevens defeated Rapid City Christian 7+2 at their local courts. The results highlight strong high school competition in Rapid City. KBHB
- ➤ South Dakota Mines Track & Field athletes are competing in three meets this week in Golden and Sioux City, including the Mines Midweek Meet & Multi, the Sioux City Relays and the Kit Mayer Classic. The meets are part of their ongoing season schedule. KBHB
