CRIME NEWS

  • A Rapid City man, Zachary Coats, 28, was sentenced to four years and two months in federal prison for stealing guns from licensed dealerships in August 2023 — his wife, Danielle, received a two-year and six-month prison term for possessing a stolen firearm.  KBHB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • South Dakota Lottery players benefited from a new multiplier feature during Tuesday’s Mega Millions drawing where 440 ticket holders shared a total prize of $8,392—compared to $2,770 without the boost. Many winners saw their prizes grow, and players now look ahead to today's drawing with a $72 million jackpot—raising hopes among fans.  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Dakota has cancelled summer teacher trainings for the new social studies standards due to federal funding cuts that removed $2.8 million for history road trips and summits—canceling plans for career exploration camps expected to serve 600 middle school students. Education officials said they will continue to provide classroom resources while working to reapply for federal funds.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Dakota Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting open house at Deadwood City Hall on April 24 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time to share plans to rebuild U.S. Highway 85 from the Twin City Animal Shelter in Lead to Pluma. Highway 85 will be closed during the work — all traffic will be detoured onto U.S. Highway 14A.  KBHB
  • The Rapid City Vision Fund Citizen Committee began touring 29 project sites earlier this week as it reviews proposals for public projects to allocate $12 million in funding—public presentations by applicants will take place from April 22 to April 25 in Council Chambers at City Hall.  Rapid City Journal
  • Summit Carbon Solutions sued hundreds of landowners to gain land for a nearly $9 billion pipeline and used eminent domain tactics that local farmers opposed — a new state law banning such use has put the project at risk. The company said most easements were secured voluntarily, but aggressive legal actions and community protests have challenged the pipeline's future — local officials now call for more oversight.  Rapid City Journal
