COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Black Hills Area Community Foundation’s Thriving Communities initiative invites local residents to vote on four causes—youth mental wellness, quality care for elders, arts for all, and child care for healthy families—in an anonymous survey open until May 31. Votes will decide which cause receives at least $100,000 in grants to help nonprofits later this fall.  Rapid City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Steve Elliott was inaugurated as the twelfth president of Black Hills State University on April 11 at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish. State and local leaders including Governor Larry Rhoden spoke at the ceremony while Elliott outlined plans to grow enrollment and expand local partnerships, and BHSU was recognized as a Purple Heart University.  KBHB

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Queen City Classic in Spearfish last Friday, over 30 schools competed in track and field events where Custer’s Kincade Lehman won the boys’ long jump with a leap of 22’5.25” and Bennett County’s Rush O’Neill won the high jump at 6’10”. Avery Marler set a school record in the long jump and won the 400m dash while RC Stevens’ Ava Holzwarth won by seven inches — the teams finished close with RC Stevens in the girls’ contest and Thunder Basin leading the boys’.  KBHB
  • This weekend, the Black Hills State rodeo teams earned a seventh and a fifth place finish at the Jackrabbit Stampede in Brookings—Emma Ohm recorded a fourth place in breakaway roping and a ninth in team roping. The teams will host the Will Lantis Yellow Jacket Stampede in two weeks—events start on April 25 at Seven Downs Arena.  KBHB
  • The BHSU Yellow Jackets won game one with a score of 6 to 3 on Saturday at Yellow Jacket Field but lost game two 7 to 1 as UCCS rallied late—leaving BHSU half a game ahead in the conference standings. BHSU will play two more games tomorrow at 10 a.m. and noon due to inclement weather—game times have been moved up.  KBHB
