BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Rapid City Regional Airport broke its previous first quarter record for passenger enplanements with over 153,000 extra travelers—an increase of more than 9%. The record follows the addition of new direct travel destinations and the airport is preparing for a busy summer with landmark events like the Sturgis Rally—hoping to keep the momentum going.  KELOLAND

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was arrested after a fight in Rapid City left another man hospitalized with stab wounds.  Rapid City Journal
  • Law enforcement arrested 12 dangerous criminals on the Pine Ridge Reservation on Tuesday after a coordinated effort by agencies including the FBI and DEA to address a surge in violent crime such as eight homicides since Sept. 1—DOJ said further operations like Operation Not Forgotten will follow in the coming months.  KELOLAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Most of South Dakota's farm goods are sold at home while only 38% were exported in 2023, worth $5.6 billion. Soybeans are the top export with about 60% sent abroad, and Canada and Mexico are the state's largest trading partners.  South Dakota News Watch

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Dakota Farmers Union offers three youth camps for kids from six to eighteen—day camps, Youth Leadership Camp and State Youth Camp that teach farm safety, cooperative education and agricultural lessons. Parents can sign up as local volunteers in 54 counties tailor programming that gives children hands-on learning and leadership skill development.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun announced on Monday that the city reached an agreement to purchase and renovate the building at 120 Knollwood Drive—currently occupied by the Sewing Center—into the new North Police Precinct. Rapid City Police Chief Don Hedrick said the 11,000 square foot facility will be ready by late summer at an estimated cost of around $1.8 million, with final approvals set for April 21.  KBHB
  • Rapid City Public Works Department has launched a program that will use donations to help eligible residents pay their utility bills. The initiative targets residents who struggle with covering city bill payments.  Rapid City Journal
