ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A Rapid City man died when his 2009 Ford Focus collided with a 2002 GMC Sierra+ causing his vehicle to roll over on Interstate 90 10 miles east of Wall on Monday afternoon, while the GMC driver and three passengers were unharmed and the South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating+. KBHB

- ➤ Ray Allen Steele, 62, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a machine gun in federal court in Lead+ his second charge was dismissed as part of his plea deal. KBHB
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Marty Two Bulls Jr. has been named the Interim Executive Director of the Rapid City Arts Council and Dahl Art Center — he will lead both organizations to support local arts initiatives. Rapid City Journal
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ South Dakota farmers planted 3,900 acres and harvested 3,700 acres of hemp in 2024, with most growth coming from fiber production despite a 30% drop in yield to 3,840 pounds per acre. Governor Larry Rhoden said better pricing helped boost fiber value by 50% while Texas planted 4,900 acres but processed fewer crops—this has kept South Dakota at the forefront of hemp fiber production. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary honored Earth Day and its founder Dayton Hyde, who would have been 100, marking 38 years of protecting wild horses since 1987. The sanctuary covers 10,000 acres along the Cheyenne River, houses over 500 horses with around 5 new births each year, and President Susan Watt warned that USDA funding may be cut—potentially challenging future operations. - ➤ The Rapid City Earth Day Trail Challenge started yesterday and runs until June 30, asking residents to hike three local trails (Serendipity, Sunrise Loop, and Nature) while cleaning up litter and taking a selfie with a challenge sign to earn a pin from South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (Outdoor Campus West). - ➤ Stomprud Angus Ranch — located in Mud Butte — has been selected for the South Dakota Leopold Conservation Award for its strong conservation efforts and careful management of its land. Larry and Eileen Stomprud and their family will be formally presented with the $10,000 award later this year to honor their work in improving soil health, water quality and wildlife habitat. KBHB

- ➤ The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission denied Summit Carbon Solutions’ CO2 pipeline permit application Tuesday because the proposed route is not viable (Commissioners Kristie Fiegen and Gary Hanson voted for the denial, while Commissioner Chris Nelson dissented), leaving open the option for a future reapplication. - ➤ At Rapid City Hall Monday night, the City Council passed a 7—3 resolution to limit downtown banners and light pole flags to official government messages only. The new rule retains exceptions for the School of Mines, veteran displays and transit advertising while continuing to honor already approved applications along Main and St. Joseph Streets.
