CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ An environmental organization and a Native American advocacy group say that two drilling proposals threaten important cultural sites in the Black Hills. One plan by a local company will test graphite at Pe’ Sla+ a sacred Lakota site+ while another Canadian proposal seeks uranium exploration near Craven Canyon with public comments open. KBHB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The South Dakota board overseeing the 911 system approved a grant program on Thursday to help call centers upgrade their equipment using extra funds from a recent surcharge increase—officials said the program, which provides roughly $80,000 per month, will support needed updates and consolidation efforts with more details coming in June. - ➤ Overnight construction on U.S. Highway 385 near the Sheridan Lake Road intersection will begin May 5, with crews working nightly from the south end of Pactola Dam & Calumet Road until July 30. Motorists can expect delays of up to 15 minutes as flaggers control traffic 24 hours a day. KBHB
- ➤ South Dakota National Guard and wildfire agencies held a training drill near Hot Springs on May 2. The exercise used helicopters that dipped 500-gallon buckets in Angostura Reservoir — teams practiced water drops on marked fire targets to prepare for the coming fire season. Rapid City Journal
