- ➤ Local breeders Dana and Aimee Sippel were named Producer of the Year by the South Dakota Quarter Horse Association during their annual convention for quality breeding and youth support; their Pierpont operation (a longtime local facility) now looks ahead to a busy 2026 show and sale season. - ➤ The Black Hills Indian Artist Market showcased about 20 vendors with live music, a fashion show, and a ribbon skirt contest at the Dahl Arts Center on Saturday. Attendees enjoyed local creativity and entertainment in a vibrant community setting. Rapid City Journal
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ GasBuddy shows South Dakota gas prices rose 33.7 cents to $4.04 per gallon today, with prices up 52.1 cents from last month and $1.05 higher than a year ago - data came from 628 local stations. KBHB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City recorded its best April for building permit valuations with 212 permits totaling over $92.7 million (breaking the previous $55 million record), including a $64.8 million permit for Black Hills Power; the city’s 792 permits from January–April valued over $160.5 million marked the second-highest tally in its history. - ➤ Governor Larry Rhoden announced that the TAP Grant program has awarded $200,000 to 40 tourism entities to boost visitor attendance across local events. The announcement was made at Mount Rushmore National Memorial and supports both rural and urban communities. KBHB
- ➤ A judge halted drilling operations near Rochford after the U.S. Forest Service permitted mineral exploration drilling on public lands on Feb. 27. Further hearings will determine when the project resumes. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ Contractors are expanding several water systems in South Dakota to boost capacity, including a $150M upgrade near Vermillion and a new pipeline near Selby (with feasibility studies underway for Western Dakota and Dakota Mainstem systems) to support growth in Rapid City and the Black Hills. - ➤ BHSU rodeo teams finished at the Cornhusker College Rodeo last Friday and Saturday with the men in sixth and the women in third, as cowgirls qualified for the 2026 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper while Jayda Reinert clinched seventh barrel racing title and Sierra Steele earned a top-5 finish. - ➤ Seven athletes from Black Hills State University competed on Saturday at the MDU Resources Community Bowl, trying to earn NCAA provisional marks before the 2026 Division II Outdoor Championships (Hanah Sullivan achieved two top-10 program marks and Cassidy Goddard moved to No. 15 nationally). - ➤ Over the weekend, Post 320 Stars rallied to win three games against Miles City – scoring 18-3, 16-1, and 6-3 – while Post 22 Hardhats split a doubleheader and lost the rubber match to the Sheridan Troopers. KBHB
