- ➤ Indigenous advocates and families gathered at the recent Red Dress Gala in Rapid City to remember those lost to disproportionate violence against Native people—77 Indigenous people are reported missing as of May 1. They shared personal grief and called on local authorities to increase support and action to address this ongoing crisis. Rapid City Journal
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City police reported 10 DUI arrests from Friday through Sunday as weather improved, which is higher than the 8 and 5 recorded on the previous weekends—figures show a rising trend in DUI incidents. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ Rapid City man Derrek Brave Heart was sentenced to 30 years in prison by Judge Joshua Hendrickson on Monday for fatally shooting Jonathan Odom outside a Family Dollar parking lot on Haines Avenue; a Pennington County jury found him guilty of first-degree manslaughter in March after rejecting his claim of self-defense. - ➤ Gas prices in South Dakota fell by 2.4 cents to average $2.99 per gallon today, according to GasBuddy (survey of 628 stations) and were 3.2 cents lower than last month (with the cheapest at $2.65 and the most expensive at $3.74). KBHB

- ➤ On May 5th, Attorney General Marty Jackley, along with Allison Morrisette and Crow Creek Chairman Peter Lengkeek, issued an executive proclamation that declared MMIP Awareness Day in South Dakota. Rapid City Journal

- ➤ Over the weekend, May 3 saw Rapid City Stevens win 8-2 and 5-2 against Spearfish, and May 4 had Rapid City Stevens beating Tea Area 13-3 while Rapid City Central defeated Douglas 10-6 — scores that mark a strong performance in local baseball. KBHB
- ➤ Black Hills State University women’s rodeo team won back-to-back Great Plains Region titles in Lincoln, Neb. — Emma Ohm clinched the breakaway roping win and the team earned their sixth rodeo crown this season — and they will compete in the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper from June 15-21.
