CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Rapid City man—Ty Hill, 25—pled guilty to aggravated assault in April after firing a 9mm Glock handgun into a vehicle during a verbal dispute and was sentenced to ten years of supervised probation this morning in Pennington County Circuit Court. KBHB
- ➤ Rapid City man Derrek Brave Heart, 30, was sentenced to 30 years for first-degree manslaughter after a Pennington County jury convicted him for a 2024 Family Dollar parking lot shooting — he appeared before Judge Joshua Hendrickson on Monday. Rapid City Journal

- ➤ The Journey Museum will soon merge with Black Hills Historical Society — forming one organization. Rapid City Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ South Dakota Mines will hold its 191st commencement ceremony on Saturday—marking President Brian Tande's first commencement as university president. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ The Meade 46-1 School District in Sturgis will hold an election on June 3 to fill three 3-year school board terms as the terms of Sandy L. Cass, Justin Jutting and Lee Spring expire while Thomas Schneller seeks a one-year term unopposed. Six candidates are running, including incumbent Sandy Cass, incumbent Justin Jutting, incumbent Lee Spring, Timothy Amdahl, Ronald L. Hays and Charles Wheeler — voters will have a say in the future direction of the board. KBHB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cuts at the National Weather Service have ended overnight weather balloon launches in Rapid City and reduced launches in Aberdeen, lowering important data for severe weather forecasts. Congressman Dusty Johnson warned that these staff cuts may leave the region less prepared for storms and urged the White House to stop further reductions — the changes began in March. KELOLAND
- ➤ In April, the city issued 223 building permits with a combined value of over $41.6 million — the second highest total ever recorded for the month. From January through April, a total of 719 permits were issued with a combined value exceeding $99.5 million, including major permits for single-family homes and commercial projects. KBHB
- ➤ South Dakota Parks Division director Jeff Van Meeteren said the state will restore a rule banning human remains at Bear Butte State Park—this rule was first adopted in 2002 for tribal respect and repealed in 2019 and will be effective 20 days after filing. KELOLAND
- ➤ Star Comes Out, president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, said he welcomed the FBI’s 90-day surge of 60 agents to work on unsolved crimes in Indian country—he stressed that his reservation with only 30 to 35 officers for 55,000 members still needs more resources as state officials and local advocates call for further support. - ➤ Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ended nearly $10 million in FEMA grants meant for updating local infrastructure and reducing disaster risk — Rapid City lost $2.6 million while Walworth County and Chancellor lost nearly $4 million and $500,000. The decision was made last month — its impact was only revealed this week. KELOLAND
