CULTURE NEWS

  • Local author Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, 92, published her 28th book, The Summer of the Bone Horses, last month and will discuss it this Saturday at Prairie Edge in Rapid City — her work portrays modern Lakota life — during a free cultural event. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes a book signing, art, and music.  Rapid City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rapid City Area Schools have built up a $161,000 school lunch debt as officials note that about $2,000 in unpaid charges is added each day—raising concerns about the district’s financial outlook.  Rapid City Journal
  • Nicole Swigart, former district superintendent, has filed a lawsuit against Rapid City Area School District alleging wrongful termination and discrimination by naming district officials including board members Michael Birkeland, Troy Carr, Jamie Clapham, Christine Stephenson, Walt Swan, and Katy Urban. The lawsuit claims that unequal pay and flawed procedures led to her August 2024 firing — she seeks compensatory damages and a jury trial — while the district denies any wrongdoing.  KBHB
  • Kids in Rapid City and the Black Hills are learning about bed pans, stethoscopes and other tools during reading sessions led by Black Hills—born Porter the Hoarder who is making reading fun.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Larry Rhoden changed the state credit card rules when he became governor in January by separating security costs from travel expenses—he also canceled some subscriptions used by his predecessor. Lawmakers questioned former Gov. Kristi Noem’s card use and may revisit the issue later this year.  KELOLAND
  • On Monday, May 12, work will begin on a $200,000 project on U.S. Highway 14A near Deadwood and Central City to install curb and gutter, repair erosion, and grade at key intersections—motorists will face lane closures and flaggers. Tru-Form Construction Inc. of Summerset will complete the work by June 30, and drivers should expect sudden stops and construction equipment nearby.  KBHB

  • Rapid City Rush signed a five-year lease extension with The Monument—ensuring the team stays at the 5,119-seat arena through the 2029-30 season—and will begin capital improvements during the 2025 offseason; home opening night for the 2025-26 season is set for October 24th.  KBHB
