CRIME NEWS

  • Jeremiah Olson, 18, was arrested after assaulting a train operator in Rapid City and is charged with simple assault, first-degree burglary and underage consumption of alcohol.  Rapid City Journal
  • Rapid City police arrested Wakinyan Dreamer, 27, on Wednesday afternoon for reckless discharge of a firearm and for possessing a firearm as a former violent offender — he now faces charges.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Sturgis, on May 2, the American Legion Riders and Highway Patrol held a ceremony—featuring a flag line, wreath laying, and Taps at Black Hills National Cemetery—to honor late Trooper Oren Hindman on the 40th anniversary of his death. His legacy as one of 59 fallen peace officers in South Dakota is remembered by his family and the community.  KBHB
  • Rapid City's Legal + Finance Committee recommended accepting a $433,000 Transportation Alternatives Program grant to fund upgrades at Mary Hall Park. City officials said planning will continue as the review process moves forward.  Rapid City Journal
  • On Wednesday night, council candidates met at the Elevate forum at the Main Street building in Rapid City to discuss ways to streamline permits, boost business, and improve public safety and housing—each candidate shared ideas on cutting red tape while strengthening support for local needs.   • Governor Larry Rhoden signed Executive Order 2025-05 on Thursday, granting a 14-day waiver that exempts key liquid fuels from drivers' hours-of-service rules — while companies must still follow safety protocols. The order aims to ease fuel shortages for local businesses and residents and will expire at midnight May 29.  KELOLAND
  • Twenty-six Rapid City residents filed a lawsuit against the city and the Cornerstone Respite Center for local grievances. Renovations began at the old Big Sky Lodge—set to offer a recovery space for homeless residents—in Rapid City.  Rapid City Journal
  • A judge ruled that the government may not transfer a Mines student out of South Dakota without first obtaining court approval — a decision siding with Saxena against Noem and the ICE head.  Rapid City Journal
  • At the April 21 City Council meeting, officials approved a rule limiting banner displays to government property and a few groups while residents warned the change might hurt messages of pride and indigenous identity. Speakers like Muffie Mousseau and Cynthia Grace said the rule could limit free speech and even lead to court cases—raising concerns about its true intent.  Native Sun News
