CRIME NEWS

  • On May 20, UNET arrested two local individuals for trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine during a traffic stop in Pennington County — the seizure included 3.3 ounces of fentanyl powder, 3,500 counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl, and three-quarters of a pound of methamphetamine, and both suspects are held at Pennington County Jail.  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rapid City Area Schools hosted a ceremony honoring Native American graduates that celebrated their achievements and cultural heritage—showing progress in education and community support.  Rapid City Journal
  • Rapid City Area Schools is holding an election for the Area 6 board seat with Jamie Clapham seeking re-election and former board member Brian Johnson running again; absentee voting is underway and early voting ends on June 2 ahead of the June 3 election. The candidates have detailed plans to improve facilities, boost academic performance, and address teacher and bus driver shortages—voters will soon decide which plan best serves local schools.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Controlled rock blasting will occur on U.S. Highway 385 on May 28 and May 29 as part of the highway construction project in Hill City. One-hour road closures will affect the stretch between Clear Creek Road and Horse Creek Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—motorists will be advised via text and must use the detour along S.D. Highway 44 and U.S. Highway 16, while a full closure between Be Still Road and Calumet Road will remain until June 13 with maintained access for local residents.  KBHB
  • South Dakota State Treasurer’s Office holds more than $1.2 billion in unclaimed property that current or former residents can claim, including bank accounts, refunds, gift certificates—and even unique non-money items. The office urges people to file claims at cash.sd.gov with no fee so they can recover their property.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley appointed long-time DCI Supervisory Special Agents Mike Hockett and Dane Rasmussen as Special Agents in Charge — they will supervise field investigations for Eastern and Western South Dakota, including drug, major felony, and officer-involved shooting cases. Hockett brings 21 years of law enforcement experience with DCI since 2009 while Rasmussen has served since 2008, and they will also oversee new agent training and hiring.  KBHB
