CRIME NEWS

  • A Rapid City man was found guilty of aggravated assault; he was on probation (after previously serving jail time for sexual assault).  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The South Dakota Highway Patrol announced it will hold sobriety checkpoints in 14 counties during June to encourage safe driving. The checkpoints are funded by the Office of Highway Safety and will be run with local law enforcement.  KELOLAND
  • The Legislature’s Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force set a plan to examine ways to cut spending by public schools and government bodies and to find new revenue sources for tax relief. Led by Sen. Chris Karr (chair) and Rep. Jon Hansen (vice chair), the 16-member panel will hold five public meetings beginning June 25 in Sioux Falls with later sessions in Rapid City, Aberdeen and Pierre.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota Social Services officials explained a Medicaid proposal that would require work, training and education for new expansion group recipients and said the plan may not be submitted for federal approval due to uncertain national legislation. A second public session will be held in Sioux Falls on June 12—public comments will be accepted through June 18 as the department reviews how to manage program costs without new funds.  KELOLAND
  • Black Hills Energy is planning a Public Safety Power Shutoff program—aimed at reducing wildfire risks—that may cause power outages in the Black Hills. Pennington County Emergency Management is preparing educational materials for local businesses and residents because the program could lead to shutdowns up to three times a year.  KELOLAND
