CRIME NEWS

  • The Rapid City Police Department is asking for help in finding 11-year-old Daicey LeCompte—she was last seen Monday at 12 p.m. wearing an all black sweater, sweatpants and shoes—and urges anyone with information to call 605-394-4131.  Rapid City Journal
  • Federal court documents unsealed Wednesday show that Drew Durand, 24, and a Rapid City woman are charged with accessory after the fact and Misprision of a Felony in connection with Sahela Sangrait’s murder on Ellsworth Air Force Base, where she disappeared last August and her body was found in March—Ellsworth Airman Quinerius Chappelle has pleaded not guilty to the murder.  KELOLAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A recount is possible in a close Rapid City school board race after Clapham credited volunteers for overcoming a Summerset polling place problem to win by three votes—Bradsky Rafferty also reacted to the win. The slim margin raises questions about the final vote count and what steps may follow.  Rapid City Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks reported that the 2024 pheasant season was the most successful in 13 years with hunters harvesting over 1.3 million roosters + 380,000 pheasants from a private shooting preserve. Landowners and ag producers set aside land and helped each hunter average about 9 birds, and officials expect even better results in the next season.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tamang said he is ready to join Rapid City Council—he plans to work with fellow members to serve the community once in office.  Rapid City Journal
  • The Rapid City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. next Monday, June 9 at City Hall to discuss community projects recommended for Vision Fund funding—members of the public can attend as the Vision Fund Citizens Committee presents its vetted proposals.  KBHB
  • The Project Prison Reset task force in South Dakota set recommendations Tuesday in Pierre to build 1,500 to 1,700 beds at a cost up to $600 million at state facilities or new locations near Worthing or Mitchell—though the plan is not final. The group will meet again on July 8 to review the options and address long-term cost challenges.  KELOLAND
