CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Court documents show that a 24-year-old man—Drew Durand—was arrested in late April in Rapid City on charges of accessory after the fact and misprision of a felony related to the death of 21-year-old Sahela Sangrait, whose remains were found outside Hill City in March after she went missing in August 2024. - ➤ Shad Olson, a former television news anchor, pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Fourth Circuit Court in Meade County to a charge of simple assault-domestic violence for an incident in February 2024 in Black Hawk—prosecutors recommended a suspended jail sentence, anger management sessions, and a no-contact order with the victim while sentencing is set for July 3. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Harvard and University of Pennsylvania researchers published a study that showed if home building had stayed at 1980s and 1990s levels, the nation would have 15 million more homes today. In South Dakota the Dakota Institute said typical home prices rose 80 percent to $384,000 in 2024 + state housing officials warned that funding requests for affordable housing far outpaced available money + population growth continues to add pressure. - ➤ Governor Larry Rhoden signed an executive order to form a disaster preparedness task force that will develop recommendations and assess risks as federal disaster relief shifts to state and local levels. The task force, called the Governor’s Resilience and Infrastructure Task Force, is chaired by Lt. Gov Tony Venhuizen & vice chaired by Adjutant General Mark Morrell to guide long-term infrastructure planning. KBHB
- ➤ Callie Meyer said she was blown away by the community support while campaigning for Rapid City Council and said she will work hard to represent local interests—she looks forward to serving the city with gratitude and commitment. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ The South Dakota Game and Parks Commission approved new rules for Purple Heart recipients—giving them free lifetime park entry and half-price camping permits—after a petition from Connie Stone at South Dakota State University.
