CRIME NEWS

  • After two days of witness testimony in Rapid City, the evidentiary hearing for NDN Collective CEO Nick Tilsen on aggravated assault and obstruction charges was continued until August 1 - his group asked Pennington County to drop the charges and supporters say he is being targeted as a Native rights advocate while state officials maintain the charges are based on clear evidence.  Native Sun News

CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 13, 143 graduates celebrated the 52nd Annual Wowapi Ohiiciyapi graduation at Oglala Lakota College with a vibrant Grand Entry, traditional dress and a round dance that honored their heritage. College leaders and community supporters (including President Dr. Dawn Tobacco Frank and Dr. Cheryl Crazy Bull) praised the graduates for their resilience and the strength of their cultural traditions.  Native Sun News

  • On June 12, Frank Star Comes Out of the Oglala Sioux Tribe said that the Bismarck consultation session did not allow enough input as government staff cuts had already begun. Tribal leaders and a federal appeals court have shown that the process may favor quick decisions—raising doubts about meeting treaty obligations.  Native Sun News

  • The YMCA ForeverWell Games are underway in Rapid City as people over 50 compete in different sports to show their strength.
