GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Boat patrols are checking lakes this summer to ensure all boaters wear life jackets and follow drinking laws, with officers keeping an eye on safety and answering questions. New boating laws will take effect July 1—raising penalties for impaired boat operation after a fatal incident on Lake Madison.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota lawmakers met on Tuesday to review why the state’s prisons are overcrowded and compared inmate demographics with neighboring states, noting that Native Americans are overrepresented in the population. The panel will meet again on July 16 in western South Dakota to discuss proposals for changes in drug penalties + potential reforms while a state task force meets on July 8 to explore new prison sites.  KELOLAND
  • Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun and officials from Pete Lien & Sons, Black Hills Energy and the Rapid City Sports Commission announced a 22.78-acre donation for the future Rapid City Sports Complex. They said the council will consider a $5 million funding request from unused Vision Fund resources — part of the planned funding — and a five-mile TIF corridor linking Exit 55 and Exit 59 will be planned soon — a move to support local development.  KBHB
  • Rapid City honored four women engineers—Morgan Falcone, Nicole Lecy, Sara Odden and Michelle Lashley—for International Women in Engineering Day to mark their 78 years of combined experience and key work supporting new development and quality-of-life projects in the city. The event highlights their role as mentors for young women considering careers in STEAM fields.  Rapid City Journal
  • All Aboard Northwest held a meeting in Canton on June 24th, met today in Fort Pierre at 6:00 p.m., and will hold sessions in Wall and Rapid City on June 26th to discuss a study that shows passenger rail can boost freight and economic development. Group co-founder Dan Bilka urged residents to send comments of support to federal and state officials to help advance these plans.  KBHB
