COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rapid City police and fire departments compete in the 20th annual Guns n' Hoses Blood Drive, run by Vitalant from Tuesday to Friday. Tuesday sessions will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—community members are encouraged to donate blood.  Rapid City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Public School Podcast gives a behind-the-scenes look at local schools every Wednesday and is hosted by Sarah Hornick and Bobbi Schaefbauer. It includes interviews with teachers and staff (showing unsung heroes) and covers topics from facility upgrades to summer meal programs (offering a clear view of school life) for community listeners.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Box Elder has been added to the potential sites list for a new state men’s prison following a request by the Project Prison Reset Task Force. The 105 acre site, located east of Box Elder near water and utilities, will be discussed at upcoming council meetings — officials have not provided any cost estimates or timelines yet.  KELOLAND
  • Tribal officials are reviewing a resolution to search for the remains of Perry Ray Robinson Jr., a Black civil rights activist who disappeared during the 1973 Wounded Knee standoff on Pine Ridge+ using non-invasive methods like cadaver dog and ground-penetrating radar+ to honor his legacy.  Rapid City Journal
  • South Dakota officials announced that starting in July, drivers must move over for any roadside vehicles with flashing blue, yellow, or amber lights. On multi-lane highways, drivers must use the farthest lane and on two-lane roads slow down 300 feet ahead to 20 mph below the limit—violations carry a minimum $270 fine and may be charged as a class one misdemeanor if a crash occurs.  KBHB
  • After Sunday's bombing in Iran raised tensions near U.S. military bases, Commander Oakley at Ellsworth Air Force Base said there are no threats identified and urged residents to report any suspicious activity — the base works closely with local law enforcement to protect the community.  KELOLAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Rushmore Swim Team Tsunami hosted the Summer Classic Swim Meet at Roosevelt Swim Center from June 20 to 22 as 327 swimmers from 22 teams representing five states competed and 136 swims received state qualifying times. Izzy Renaud qualified for Speedo Sectionals in the 200m breaststroke and a 200m medley relay team broke their state record — local teams will compete in USA Swimming’s Futures Championship in Madison from July 23 to 26 — marking a successful event for the region.  KBHB
  • Rapid City leaders announced plans to build a new $50 million indoor sports complex on 12 acres with basketball courts, an indoor turf field and a sports performance area to offer year-round space for athletics. The mayor and sports commission are finalizing a funding plan using donations, public/private partnerships and a hotel tax while the city reviews a tax increment financing proposal—details will be set as community needs grow.  South Dakota News Watch
  • Patrick Cerney of Rapid City caught an Atlantic Salmon on Lake Sharpe — setting a new hook and line record as announced by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.  KELOLAND
