CRIME NEWS

  • Richard Lee Hillyer admitted he took a razor blade from jail to cut his calves, and a Pennington County jury found him guilty of possessing a dangerous weapon—the South Dakota Supreme Court ruled his trial was fair, upholding his Class 2 felony conviction.  KELOLAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cheyenne River Lakota elder Madonna Thunder Hawk celebrated her 85th birthday on June 18th with a family ceremony featuring cake + fresh flowers, and the Warrior Women’s Project created a digital scrapbook to honor her lifelong activism and impact on Indigenous rights. This tribute reflects her decades of advocacy and role in important protests such as Wounded Knee ’73.  Native Sun News
  • South Dakota Ballet held its 5th annual Summer Intensive last week at Britza Performing Arts Studio, where 50 dancers from 11 studios trained in classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz and choreography under expert instruction. Madeleine Scott, the founder, created the program to bring professional ballet closer to local youth + expand statewide dance opportunities.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Meade County Commissioners this week approved sending a letter to the Black Hills National Forest Supervisor’s Office opposing a proposed wilderness designation of the Beaver Park Roadless Area. Commissioners said the designation would restrict public access, grazing and vegetation management — key issues for this high-use area near the I-90 corridor and the Black Hills National Cemetery.  KBHB
  • The state Board of Water and Natural Resources approved loans to seven communities for eight projects that will improve water systems and landfill facilities. Rapid City received a $3,932,000 loan at 3.5% interest for a new wellhouse—an upgrade to the city’s water supply.  KELOLAND

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On June 20, the Oglala Lakota Housing Authority broke ground on a 160-acre site east of Martin — planning 25 new affordable housing units that include nine one-bedroom, eight two-bedroom, and eight three-bedroom homes — to expand affordable housing on the Pine Ridge Reservation.  Native Sun News

  • Today, Rapid City hosts the Mount Rushmore BMX Nationals at the local BMX Track. The event—one of 28 national stops on the tour—features races for young riders up to Pro-AM competitors with cash prizes.  KELOLAND
