CRIME NEWS
- ➤ David Shangreaux, Jr. (25) was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole by Hughes County Circuit Court for the November 30 stabbing death of 17-year-old Evie Maxey (a Rapid City resident) after a Hughes County jury found him guilty in April, with Attorney General Marty Jackley saying justice has been served. - ➤ Rapid City man Tell Cadotte was sentenced Tuesday to 70 years plus an extra 10 years concurrently—he was convicted on nine counts of first-degree rape for abusing a child starting at age six—and investigators uncovered hundreds of abuse images on his phone. KBHB
- ➤ A judge sentenced Veronica Ortega from Box Elder and Paige Sierra of Rapid City—both convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine—to 24 years and four months and 11 years and 9 months in federal prison after they pled guilty in April following an indictment in February 2024. KBHB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Col. Erick D. Lord will take command of the 28th Bomb Wing during a change of command ceremony later this month at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Pennington County Board of Commissioners voted to shift the County Administration Building to a five-day work week, and officials said they will decide on daily operating hours in August after reviewing public feedback — the change will start when the facility moves to 900 Concourse Drive. KBHB
- ➤ The Rapid City Community Development Department will hold an open house on proposed vacation home rental regulations July 24 from 2-4 p.m. in the Circle of Friends Community Room at City Hall. The draft ordinance—reflecting community input and extensive research—will be reviewed by the Planning Commission and City Council in August or September. KBHB
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering plans to vaccinate poultry and dairy cows against bird flu by next spring, state veterinarian Beth Thompson said at an Animal Industry Board meeting Tuesday. South Dakota has had bird flu in 117 commercial and 26 backyard flocks and seven dairy herds, with a Canada goose reported in Stanley County on July 3 — and officials are testing milk to check for the disease.
