GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Larry Rhoden announced a special legislative session scheduled for Tuesday, September 23 at 9:00 a.m. CT where lawmakers will review plans for a new men's prison and its cost after a task force ruled out sites outside Sioux Falls and capped expenses at $650 million. Lawmakers will need a two-thirds vote in both houses to authorize the project. KELOLAND
- ➤ South Dakota 9-1-1 centers have begun using the RapidSOS Unite GIS module—an AI-powered system that sends real-time caller data to help locate emergencies faster. The upgrade adds mapping details and redundant digital connections—ensuring continuity during outages and enhancing response in urban and rural areas. KBHB
- ➤ Lawmakers defended Senate Bill 216, a law passed and signed in March that capped property tax increases on owner-occupied homes at 3% over five years. Some city and county leaders warned the measure may force budget cuts (such as reduced library and pool hours), while supporters and the governor said it provides tax relief for homeowners. KELOLAND
