CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Mitchell baseball player Peyton Mandel is suing the American Legion adjutant and two media companies for repeating *false* rape claims that hurt his reputation and job prospects after he pleaded guilty to accessory to a felony following a 2023 hazing incident, filing the suit in Davison County Circuit Court on July 18. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City is partnering with four downtown businesses to offer free motorcycle parking for the 85th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Thirteen vehicle spaces are reserved at Hotel Alex Johnson, Prairie Edge, Rapid City Visitor Center and FourFront Design from August 1—10; officials remind drivers to exercise caution given the increase in motorcycle traffic. - ➤ Rapid City will partner with local businesses to set aside 13 free motorcycle parking spaces in four locations for the Sturgis Rally from August 1-10—riders can plan ahead—and the move aims to ease parking challenges during the event. Rapid City Journal
- ➤ The Rapid City Council approved a tax increment financing district on Monday night to help fund a proposed theme park called Libertyland near the intersection of Mall Drive and Lacrosse Street—Pete Lien and Sons will partner with designers to include an RV resort, amphitheater, indoor water park, and retail spaces in the plan. The decision supports the planned mixed-use development that was first approved by the council last December. KBHB

- ➤ Black Hills Life Flight said motorcyclists at the Sturgis Rally face risks of traumatic brain injuries, musculoskeletal injuries including amputations, and rib and lung injuries—injuries that require advanced airway management, splinting, and blood transfusions. Meade County Sheriff Pat West advised riders to practice defensive driving, avoid alcohol, and wear proper protective gear to prevent accidents. KBHB
- ➤ Summer can be hard for children who lose the school routine and feel lonely; experts say calls to 988 hit a record high in June with nearly 27% from kids under 20. A Helpline Center fundraiser run featuring local runner Dan Santella is set for September 25 from the Wyoming border to the Iowa border + officials hope more structure can help improve mental health. - ➤ Custer Ambulance Service has adopted the Rider Alert program to help save lives by providing free cards with vital medical information for motorcyclists in crashes. Cards and stickers are available at the Milwaukee Motorcycle Clothing Company tent in Custer and at the upcoming Sturgis Motorcycle Rally—riders can also request a kit from the service. KBHB
