CRIME NEWS

  • Today, Judge Heidi Linngren in Rapid City reduced David Schneider's 75-year sentence to 35 years—making him eligible for parole in about eight years—in the 2015 Jessica Rehfeld murder case, with the decision supported by Jessica's family and the state’s attorney.  KBHB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Projections from the state Department of Labor and Regulation show that Sioux Falls will grow by 9.3% to 195,612 jobs and Rapid City will add 7.6% to reach 85,450 jobs by 2032, while rural areas’ share will fall from 49.5% to 48.9%. Healthcare, food service, ambulatory care and professional services are set to drive growth in the metros—although sectors like publishing, printing and related services are expected to decline due to digital media and automation.  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rapid City Area Schools are asking for public input on a possible referendum to address urgent facility needs like HVAC and security. They will accept survey feedback until August 20th — the responses will guide a new plan that costs less than a previous proposal — to shape future facility improvements.  KBHB
  • Girls on the Run is preparing for its fall season and will offer an eight-week after-school program for girls in grades 3-8 that teaches social and emotional skills and ends with a noncompetitive 5K (a safe, inclusive event). Registration is open and the program is seeking more coaches at sites including Rapid City.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun previewed his 2026 budget Monday night, stating that $337 million is set for expenditures largely funded by sales tax revenue and highlighting healthcare as a top industry. The City Council scheduled public review sessions August 5-8 — meetings from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall will allow residents to hear detailed discussions before formal readings of the budget by September 30.  KBHB
  • Today, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced that two DCI agents completed a 40-hour online ICE 287(g) training to help enforce immigration laws against violent criminals and drug dealers. The state will soon establish a Task Force Program in Pierre to further support public safety—maintaining law and order throughout South Dakota.  KBHB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sturgis Hospital is ready for extra patients during the 85th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as thousands of riders have arrived—staff work extra shifts to treat injuries, illnesses, and dehydration and will move very sick patients to hospitals in Rapid City or Spearfish if needed.  KELOLAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rapid City Post 320 stunned Post 22—who lost their opening game this morning—in a 4-1 win at the South Dakota American Legion State Class A Baseball Tournament in Watertown. Laadon Faatz pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and only one run allowed, and Post 22 will play tomorrow against the Brandon Valley/Renner game loser.  KBHB
