COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota has announced plans to build a Ronald McDonald House in Rapid City that will offer 12 private bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a kitchen, shared lounges and a play area. The charity seeks support for the $10 million project which is designed to serve over 600 families each year—helping them stay near their sick or injured child.  KELOLAND

CRIME NEWS

  • Ryan Scott Arrowsmith, a Canadian man injured in a 2017 Sturgis motorcycle accident, is suing his former lawyers—Swier Law Firm, Scott Swier, and Michael Henderson—for failing to alert the city within the required 180 days while Michael Henderson now faces criminal charges for grand theft and misconduct with an arraignment set for Aug. 20.  KBHB
  • Rapid City man David Schneider, 33, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in 2018 for holding Jessica Rehfeld down during her stabbing by Richard Hirth—his sentence has now been modified to 75 years in prison.  Rapid City Journal
  • Rapid City police said on Tuesday night at about 6:30 p.m. that a motorcycle rider died after his bike abruptly accelerated from Founders Park and fishtailed near West Omaha Street—colliding with a light post before he was taken to the hospital, with police still investigating the crash.  KELOLAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • In two days, over half a million riders will arrive in Sturgis for the 85th Motorcycle Rally as local officials finalize preparations. Public Works crews will work overnight—between midnight and 8:00 a.m.—to adjust traffic routes and reposition sponsor vehicles for a smooth rally start.  KELOLAND

  • Rapid City Area Schools sent a survey to community members as part of its push for a potential bond vote, aiming to gather opinions on future school funding.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun presented his $337 million 2026 budget to City Council on Monday and noted a $3.3 million cut due to lower revenues while outlining plans for a series of public budget hearings next week (Aug. 5 through 8 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers).  Rapid City Journal
