ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • During the Sturgis Rally from Saturday to Sunday, eighteen motorcycle crashes occurred, including a fatal 2019 Harley Davidson crash near mile marker 56 that killed a 58-year-old rider and injured three others, while highway patrol made 21 DUI arrests, 31 misdemeanor and 14 felony drug arrests, and issued 252 citations and 592 warnings—officials noted that information remains preliminary.  KELOLAND
  • One person died in a motorcycle crash involving four bikes near Mount Rushmore on Interstate 90 east of Chamberlain as the South Dakota Highway Patrol investigated the incident (posted Aug 3, 10:28 a.m.).  KELOLAND

CRIME NEWS

  • Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandwater said that during Saturday’s 85th Motorcycle Rally police responded to 3 injury and 2 non-injury accidents — one involving a rider critically injured after fleeing a traffic stop — and handled increased fight calls plus drug, DUI and illegal parking citations while the Meade County Sheriff’s Office logged 208 service calls, multiple traffic stops and several arrests.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senate candidate Brian Bengs, a Navy veteran from Hot Springs, said he prefers thinking for himself over following party lines as he campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat; he believes taxes and health care are the key issues. He is running as an independent against incumbent Mike Rounds and needs 3,502 signatures to qualify for the 2026 general election ballot—Bengs emphasized that a less partisan approach could improve the country.  KELOLAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Sturgis Rally in the Black Hills, daredevil Colby Raha broke the world record with a 205-foot jump on a Harley V-twin at the Thunderdome on Saturday night — he broke the previous record set in 2015 — and hundreds of riders cheered him.  KBHB
