- ➤ Forty groups joined the South Dakota Healthy Nutrition Collaborative in September to fight hunger among the 113,500 people who faced food insecurity in 2023. Bread Break — a group that collects extra food — plans to start a program in Rapid City while other members work to share resources and improve access to meals statewide. South Dakota News Watch

- ➤ Wall Drug expects a good year as bikers head to the 85th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally—staff report a busy week with many customers returning after soft years. The store spans 76,000 square feet and now includes a nickel press—supporting its famous attractions like raspberry ice cream and five cent coffee for rally visitors. KELOLAND
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City Police arrested 36-year-old Leroy Hemphill on Friday near Rapp Street and N. Lacrosse after he ran a stop sign— a search of his vehicle uncovered a baggie of cocaine and a loaded handgun. KBHB
- ➤ Rapid City Police arrested a 38-year-old man over the weekend after he ran from officers at a parking violation stop and tried to tackle an officer when tasers did not work—he now faces charges for DUI, obstruction, resisting arrest, assault on law enforcement, driving under revocation, open container in a motor vehicle and a parole hold—police said. - ➤ Between 6 a.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday, the Sturgis Police Department made 44 traffic arrests and 36 non-traffic arrests at the annual motorcycle rally while charging 17 locals with offenses such as disorderly conduct and drug possession—figures that were lower than those recorded last year. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ South Dakota Highway Patrol released its Monday Rally statistics report showing 38 DUI arrests, 65 misdemeanor drug arrests and 33 felony drug arrests with 478 citations issued so far—this is above last year’s 471 on the same date and since Saturday the patrol reported 20 injury accidents including one fatality. - ➤ The South Dakota Department of Transportation reported that between Aug. 1 and Aug. 3, 2025, 178,995 vehicles entered Sturgis during the 85th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, marking a 7.6% rise over the previous five-year average. A full report with additional Black Hills counts will be available on the SDDOT website during the week of Aug. 18. KBHB
- ➤ The South Dakota Commission on Gaming alerted the public today about fraudulent online casinos impersonating licensed establishments — these unauthorized sites use misleading ads and fake apps that risk financial loss and identity theft, and consumers are urged to report any suspicious activity. - ➤ Black Hills State University named Kelly Kruger as interim head coach for the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team for the upcoming season. Kruger brings 35 seasons of coaching and over 500 wins + a strong record of rebuilding teams to lead the program in Spearfish. KBHB
