COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feeding South Dakota is hosting BackPack Week through Aug. 10 to fight child hunger by raising funds and providing essential supplies for kids in the Black Hills—donations are vital for the campaign's success.  Rapid City Journal
  • The YMCA of Rapid City got a Community Grant from the Taco Bell Foundation to help teens get ready for jobs and learn important life skills in the Black Hills. Local coach Pam Hare nominated the YMCA, and the grant will pay for teen scholarships.  KBHB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, a 60-year-old man riding a 2019 Harley Davidson lost control at a right-hand corner on U.S. Highway 16A near mile marker 43 and crashed into a 2000 Indian motorcycle and a 2008 Can-Am Roadster - he died, his female passenger was airlifted to hospital, and drivers of the other vehicles sustained serious injuries.  KBHB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Director Kate Beecroft’s film East of Wall — a docu-fiction set in the Badlands that tells the true story of rancher Tabatha Zimiga and her family — won the Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year. The film will have its South Dakotan premiere in Sioux Falls on August 12 and will be released nationwide on August 15.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Mike Rounds secured $9.4 million for 35 public tribal radio stations to help keep these vital services running after federal cuts—while the Bureau of Indian Affairs said the first grants will be provided by the end of this year or early next. This funding supports stations that serve remote communities, including four in our state.  South Dakota News Watch
  • Rapid City Council approved a tax increment financing district by an 8—2 vote to fund a new police precinct at 120 Knollwood Drive and support a North Lacrosse Street retail project likely to include Chick-fil-A. The $10.06 million TIF will direct future tax revenue to local improvements—such as a stoplight on Luna Avenue—and council members debated traffic impacts and project benefits.  Rapid City Journal
  • Gov Larry Rhoden appointed Nick Fosness from Britton — filling the District 1 seat vacated by Christopher Reder who resigned on May 2. Fosness, chief executive officer at Avera’s Marshall County Hospital Healthcare Center and incoming president for the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations, is expected to vote on a male prison project in Sioux Falls during a special legislative session on Sept. 23.  KELOLAND
  • Rapid City officials attended a groundbreaking event Tuesday where Gov. Larry Rhoden and NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace helped start work on the new bocce complex—an initiative expected to boost local recreation—marking a major milestone for the city.  Rapid City Journal

  • This past weekend, Sturgis rider Colby Raha broke the world record by jumping 205 feet at the Thunderdome — five thousand fans watched as he drove at 77 mph from a ramp built in a small parking lot — celebrating his team's hard work.  KELOLAND
