COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 80th Central States Fair opened August 15 in Rapid City and will run through August 23—bringing rides, fair food, livestock shows, and live concerts as part of the Black Hills Energy Concert Series. Special events include Ag Appreciation on August 18, Military Appreciation on August 19, and First Responders Appreciation on August 20.  KBHB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Cold Spring Fire, burning 2 miles southeast of Pringle on Forest Service land, grew to 25 acres and has been fought by federal resources since it was reported on Thursday—another fire near Oglala and north of Pine Ridge is at 7 acres.  KBHB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the South Dakota Hall of Fame in Chamberlain is running a campaign to raise $4.5 million by 2026 to expand its exhibits and education programs, and it has already raised over half its goal. The campaign, which began in 2024, will upgrade the museum and expand the Legends and Learning program — adding digital displays and hosting an expanded induction ceremony on Sept. 12-13.  South Dakota News Watch

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central High School’s Class of 1977 was honored by the South Dakota Hall of Fame nonprofit with its Acts of Excellence award for community service—recognizing their contributions to the local community.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley joined a bipartisan group of 37 Attorneys General to urge Instagram to change a new location-sharing feature that shows users' exact positions on a map — he said the tool risks allowing bad actors to target vulnerable groups. The letter asks Instagram to block minors, warn adults, and give users an easy way to disable the feature.  KBHB
