- ➤ An unattended campfire started a small vegetation fire near Pactola Reservoir on Saturday evening in an unauthorized camping area of the Black Hills National Forest and a five-person team from Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department quickly contained the blaze using backpack pumps and hand tools before turning the scene over to U.S. Forest Service crews. - ➤ The Rapid City Police Department has been assigning extra officers on DUI shifts from Aug. 18 to Sept. 1—focusing on stopping drunk driving during Labor Day weekend. Rapid City Journal
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices in South Dakota dropped 5.4 cents this week — the average now sits at $2.88 per gallon as a GasBuddy survey shows. The lowest price was $2.56 and the highest reached $3.64 while national gas prices held steady at $3.09 today. KBHB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City Area Schools held its district opener yesterday at The Monument, where over 1,700 staff gathered to welcome the new school year. Teacher Ross Hunter and Superintendent Jami Jo Thompson shared plans—centered on listening to staff and community leaders—to strengthen a positive and supportive school environment. - ➤ Brody Wells, a 21-year-old cowboy from Powell, won the PRCA Xtreme Broncs Finals held Sunday night, August 17th in Rapid City — he scored a 92-point and a 91-point ride to reach 183 total points and earn a $38,000 prize. His victory positions him for a run at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December. KBHB
