COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sturgis officials reported a successful 85th Motorcycle Rally as DOT counted 537,459 vehicles over 10 days and mobile data estimated over 661,000 visits through Aug. 8—an 11.3% increase over the five-year average.  KBHB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Black Hills Corp. and NorthWestern Energy announced an all-stock merger on Tuesday that will form a new regional utility based in Rapid City. The $15.4 billion deal, set to serve about 2.1 million customers, must win shareholder and regulator approval and will close in 12 to 15 months — it is expected to boost first-year earnings.  KBHB

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Jon Dillon, a 37-year-old from Rapid City, was sentenced to prison with concurrent terms of 20 years for aggravated assault on law enforcement—2 years for aggravated eluding and 10 years for riot in jail—that follow a long record of violent offenses and dangerous pursuits.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennington County Commission approved new hours for the Administration Office as departments move to the new building at 900 Concourse Drive —7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday— with changes set for November 3 for Register of Deeds, November 10 for the Treasurer’s Office, Planning and Zoning and Auditor’s Office, and November 13 for Equalization while other departments at 130 Kansas City Street keep the current hours.  KBHB
  • Rapid City Council voted unanimously on Monday night to ban the sale of Tianeptine (an unregulated drug linked to addiction, severe withdrawal and overdose deaths) and said they will push for a statewide ban even as possession remains legal.  KBHB

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Range Days Rodeo - which opened Monday at the Central States Fair in Rapid City - drew a large crowd while round 1 scores were released for events like bareback riding and tie-down roping.  KBHB
  • Area boys golf teams opened the season Monday at Boulder Canyon Country Club where St Thomas More won the team title with a 308—Sturgis finished second, followed by Custer, Hot Springs, and Rapid City Christian. Hayden Heig won the individual title with a 68 while his teammate Braeden Strain came in second.  KBHB
