EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Rapid City school board discussed delaying school start times after RCAS hit 98 degrees on its first day — and today an early dismissal is planned. Board members hope the change will help avoid heat-related closures in upcoming days — a proposal still under review.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State agencies worked to fix a large computer outage that began Tuesday and disrupted computer and phone networks—prompting the South Dakota Supreme Court to declare a judicial emergency Wednesday before 11:30 a.m. Filing deadlines and electronic court filings were suspended while teams replaced impacted hardware and restored services.  KELOLAND
  • Attorney General Marty Jackley, Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken and Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun are joining forces to direct an estimated $79 million from opioid settlements toward addiction treatment programs and public safety—with more than $31 million available immediately. They will ask lawmakers to release additional funds while avoiding an endowment—ensuring swift action against the drug crisis.  KELOLAND
  • At a Monday night council meeting, state Sen. Taffy Howard and others raised concerns over TIF-funded projects for Libertyland USA and a new sports complex, warning that misused funds and rising property taxes may burden taxpayers. The Libertyland and Catalyst TIFs will go for planning and zoning review today with subsequent votes on August 27 and September 2, while Mayor Jason Salamun defended their benefits—citing traffic improvements, better infrastructure, and boosted tourism.  Rapid City Journal

  • Addiction treatment centers in Sioux Falls and Rapid City are set to receive $79 million from the National Opioid Settlement Fund over 18 years, with more than $31 million provided so far — Attorney General Marty Jackley said the funds will expand access and recovery services.  KELOLAND
