The South Dakota Highway Patrol has adopted the new StarChase system—designed to launch a small tracker onto fleeing vehicles and allow troopers to follow movements by GPS—and reduced officers’ need for dangerous high-speed pursuits.
The tool was installed in multiple patrol units yesterday to help make arrests in a safer, more controlled manner.
SDDOT is winding down operations after the 2025 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which saw 537,459 vehicles and an 11.3% increase over past years.
The agency said its team worked for months to prepare highways for heavy traffic—now roads are back to normal—ensuring safety for all travelers.
