CRIME NEWS

  • Rapid City Police arrested 62-year-old Kenneth Purdy on August 24th at 11:00 a.m. for aggravated assault after he brandished a handgun during a road rage incident at 5th Street and Columbus Street—officials recovered the weapon as evidence.  KBHB

  • Artist Diane Kappes uses her interior design training to create unique wool pictures by washing, dyeing, and hand-felting locally sourced wool. Her handmade fiber art—shown at award-winning festivals—draws curious viewers and highlights her passion for original creations.  KELOLAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central High School is celebrating its 100-year mascot, the Cobbler, a tradition that started when the school began in 1923 and the mascot was created two years later—staff use this milestone to promote the core values of trust, compassion, stability and hope.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rapid City Council unanimously voted to ban the sale of Tianeptine—commonly called 'gas station heroin'—after an Aug. 18 hearing. The new measure will limit the drug’s availability as officials work to reduce its misuse.  Rapid City Journal
  • A new water booster station opened today in eastern Rapid City to provide water with proper pressure for over 3,000 residents and local businesses—city officials said the facility also strengthens fire response and will boost future property tax revenue on the redeveloped cow pasture site.  KELOLAND
  • Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun and local officials cut the ribbon on the $5.1 million Shepherd Hills Regional Water Booster Pump Station Tuesday—this new station will soon increase water pressure for residents.  Rapid City Journal
  • Rapid City will hold an open house on draft updates to its Comprehensive Plan on Thursday, September 4 from 4-6 p.m. at Dahl Arts Center (713 Seventh Street) where officials will gather input for future improvements.  Rapid City Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since 2023, Monument Health’s Cancer Care Institute in Rapid City has added more cancer doctors and services to help patients detect and treat cancer early. The center—serving as a main hub for western South Dakota—will keep growing its programs to offer outreach, education, and support.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota state veterinarian Beth Thompson and a livestock group said officials did not share clear details after a Maryland resident was confirmed with the first New World screwworm infection on August 25, even though the risk to people and animals is low. R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard called for a full investigation and the creation of a task force — steps that could help protect the cattle market from further risk.  KBHB
