Roger Vick enlisted in the Navy at age 15 in April 1944 by convincing recruiters he was older—he passed boot camp in Farragut, Idaho and served on a tank landing ship while facing a Caribbean hurricane and meeting his brother.

He was discharged in October 1944, reenlisted in March 1947, finished school in Sioux Falls, and later founded a construction company before retiring and being laid to rest in Hill City.
