ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two men died in an ATV crash seven miles south of Custer on Monday evening after their 2023 Can-Am Maverick Side-by-Side slid off Flynn Creek Road and hit a tree while entering an east side ditch, and the highway patrol is investigating the incident as families are being notified.  KBHB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Summer 2025 saw fewer visitors and lower spending across South Dakota, with Fort Hays Wild West Town dropping 40% and Sioux Falls reporting a 9% decline. State tourism secretary Jim Hagen is hopeful that fall events—such as the Buffalo Roundup and pheasant season—and 2026 Mount Rushmore celebrations will boost numbers.  KBHB
  • South Dakota Trade, a nonprofit with public and private funds, is working to help local businesses sell goods overseas after the state's exports rose to 2.9 percent of its GDP. Deputy commissioner Jesse Fonkert said the group will send more trade missions to support companies in meeting export rules—aiming to boost jobs and investments.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rapid City officials launched an online survey on the draft comprehensive plan as residents who cannot attend tomorrow’s open house at the Dahl Arts Center—713 7th Street may provide feedback until Sept. 9. The draft will be revised using public input before final review by the Planning Commission and City Council later this month and in October.  Rapid City Journal
  • South Dakota Department of Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko resigned amid growing criticism over the new men's prison project — she will remain in her position until Oct. 20 as Gov. Larry Rhoden works to name her replacement.  KBHB
  • Lawmakers, local officials, and educators met at the State Fair in Huron during South Dakota Farmers Union Day to discuss property tax changes and warned that lower tax levels could mean fewer funds for schools, roads, and police services. The Legislature’s property tax task force will meet two more times in 2025 and deliver recommendations before the 2026 session—proposals include shifting the tax burden.  KBHB

  • During the Douglas Invitational in Box Elder Tuesday, Sturgis golfer Jace Thurman won the event with a score of 79—his teammate Jaxon Dodson finished one stroke behind—while Hot Springs captured the team title with a total score of 327.  KBHB
