  • Sonic Automotive reported record-breaking motorcycle sales at the 85th Sturgis Rally as its new Sturgis Harley-Davidson store in the Black Hills sold over 1,100 bikes and nearly matched its flagship store's performance. More than 800,000 riders attended the rally—confirming Sonic’s strong momentum in the Harley-Davidson community.  KBHB

CRIME NEWS

  • Rapid City police and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office are searching for 23-year-old Max Martinez and 24-year-old Brittany Dillon—both local residents—who are connected to last week’s fatal shooting of Monte Gakin in an apartment in the city’s northeast, and anyone with information is asked to contact the police.  KELOLAND
  • A 63-year-old man from Black Hawk, Jackie Corean, was sentenced on Tuesday to 11 years and three months in federal prison and five years of supervised release for his role in a conspiracy to distribute meth across South Dakota—including in Rapid City and the Pine Ridge Reservation—after his home served as a distribution hub and law enforcement seized six firearms along with drug paraphernalia.  KELOLAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Oceti Sakowin Writers Society in Rapid City got a $150,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to create The Oceti Sakowin Reader—an anthology of Dakota, Nakota and Lakota literature including stories, poems, and teacher guides. Tribal elders and OSWS board members will lead the project over the next two years to help local students learn about their heritage.  Native Sun News

  • Oceti Sakowin Community Academy in Rapid City weaves Lakota tradition into daily lessons and modern subjects such as AI literacy—this unique method enriches Native students with cultural pride and modern skills. The school fills classrooms from kindergarten to third grade with 70 students supported by a major grant for future growth.  Native Sun News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Dakota State University researchers showed that PlanetScope satellites track plant growth in semi-arid areas—helping farmers adjust planting times, ranchers manage forage, and state leaders prepare for drought.  KBHB

  • Rapid City Council reviewed Mayor Jason Salumun's $337 million budget for 2026 and discussed added funding for senior centers while noting cuts for Minneluzahan Senior Center and Canyon Lake Activity Center.
