  • The Anamosa Street Bridge over Interstate 190 in Rapid City is now open—providing a new connection for local drivers and easing traffic in the area.  Rapid City Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Jonathan Eagle Elk pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter for aiding in the death of Maria Makes Him First and to second-degree murder for Louis Swift Bird's death, was found incompetent after a competency evaluation — and will be admitted to a federal medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.  KELOLAND
  • Rapid City Police said a visiting man was robbed and assaulted after he asked a woman for marijuana advice Saturday night—police arrested 25-year-old Shayna Long on charges including first degree robbery and recovered some of the victim’s property while still searching for the male suspect.  KBHB
  • Rapid City police arrested 25-year-old Shayna Long after a Saturday night robbery at a northeastern gas station where a man with a gun assaulted a victim trying to buy marijuana and officers are still searching for the armed male suspect.  KELOLAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rapid City fire crews gathered at the airport today for a training that simulated aircraft rescues—practicing how to control exterior fires and evacuate passengers from within a burning plane.  KELOLAND
  • State campgrounds saw a 3% drop in nights stayed through August compared to last year as wet July weather led to fewer weeknight visits—campers enjoyed more day passes and higher revenues at Custer State Park. Director Jeff VanMeeteren updated officials in Rapid City last week and plans to target increased weeknight use next season.  KELOLAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two independent rating agencies provided new grades for South Dakota hospitals today with three getting 5 stars, seven earning 4 stars and two receiving 3 stars—no hospital scored below 3 stars. Monument Health Rapid City Hospital improved to 4 stars—up from three stars last year and a 1-star in 2023—showing clear progress.  South Dakota News Watch
