COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Rapid City Fire Department and Corral Drive students observed 9/11 by walking a tribute path and honoring first responders, with fire trucks marked 343 to remember the fallen. Firefighter Paramedic Nick Knotek and Principal Drew Foley stressed that the event teaches the history and sacrifice of that day—bringing the community together in remembrance.  KELOLAND

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews responded quickly to the Elk Creek Fire reported at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday just south of Tilford in Meade County — state and local resources contained the human caused blaze to about a tenth of an acre.  KBHB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rapid City-based NDN Collective cut 40 percent of its staff after funding losses reduced its assets from over $50 million to about $25 million. The nonprofit will focus on local work—such as preventing mining in the Black Hills and starting a 70-acre affordable housing and community center project—while keeping its national grant and lending programs open.  Native Sun News

  • More than 1,000 South Dakota Mines students will attend the annual Fall Career Fair at the King Center on Tuesday, Sept 16 from 11 a.m.—4 p.m. over 200 industry leaders are expected to recruit students for jobs and internships.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A local group has begun a petition drive to send the Libertyland TIF to a ballot vote so Rapid City residents can decide on tax breaks for a $125 million theme park planned north of Rushmore Crossing. The petition must reach 2,572 valid signatures by Sept. 26—city leaders say TIFs have previously helped fund local infrastructure projects.  Rapid City Journal
  • Yamni Jack now works as the Public Relations and Communications Director for the tribal council and hosts the Bert and Ernie Show on KILI—he has coached basketball and helped with local sports broadcasts. He has cut his five jobs down to three after recovering from Covid and a mini stroke.  Native Sun News
  • Today, local groups partnered with state representative Peri Pourier to hold a legislative advocacy training in Rapid City aimed at addressing barriers that Native voters face amid new state bills that limit access—participants prepared to learn strategies to strengthen voter education and engagement ahead of legislative meetings.  Native Sun News
