COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Knights of Columbus delivered hundreds of winter coats for local kids this week as part of the Coats for Kids project—34 cases of new coats were provided for those in need.  Rapid City Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Flutter Productions works with Black Hills Works to offer live theater roles to people of all abilities—and the group stages productions that adapt scripts and include sign language for performers from age 4 to 80. For 14 years the company has created shows that let every member shine on stage.  KELOLAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Developer Dream Design International said that phase one of the nearly 700-acre Black Hills Industrial Center—located off Old Folsom Road east of Highway 79—is almost complete with major upgrades like streets, water, and utilities already in place. The developer added that two more phases will depend on market conditions while the Rapid City Council recently cut the project cost by nearly $5 million due to changes in road plans.  Rapid City Journal
  • Gas prices in South Dakota fell by 3.8 cents to $2.93 per gallon today—GasBuddy’s survey of 628 stations shows the state’s lowest price was $2.67 while the highest was $3.61, with prices 2.1 cents above last month and 12.0 cents below last year.  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WalletHub today released a report showing that teachers in South Dakota earn $3,728 less per year than they did 16 years ago when adjusted for inflation—making the state the 5th worst for teacher earnings. The study measured 24 key metrics including income growth and pupil-teacher ratios.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The new Pete Lien & Sons Shooting Sports Complex is a $20 million gun range on 400 acres 12 miles north of Rapid City and will open on November 8 with shooting bays and a main building for events. Some lawmakers and local landowners have criticized the use of Future Fund money and worry about traffic and noise + officials say they will use berms and natural land to reduce sound.  KBHB
  • South Dakota legislators will meet on September 23 at the state Capitol to decide on Governor Larry Rhoden’s plan for a 1,500-bed men’s prison after the state House rejected necessary funding in Lincoln County—making it the 31st special session in state history. The report also reviews past sessions that addressed issues like rural credits, public health, and impeachment.  KELOLAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Monday evening's Spearfish Invitational, the Sturgis Scooper Competitive Cheer team finished as runner-up with 139 points while Rapid City Central led the cheer contest with 177.50 points, followed by Douglas, St Thomas More and Belle Fourche. In the dance competition, Rapid City Central won with 355.50 points—Rapid City Stevens finished second with 335 points.  KBHB
