COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A recent food security study in Rapid City highlighted gaps with about 33,000 residents living in food deserts, and many food pantries closing too early for working families. Black Hills Area Community Foundation will use a 100 thousand dollar grant next year—supporting extended hours and community programs to ease access challenges.  KELOLAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Dakota Tech celebrated 30 years of its CDL program—where local students learn to start trucking careers—and shared success stories from graduates.  Rapid City Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Solitario Resource Corp from Colorado plans to drill at 49 sites near Cheyenne Crossing and Tinton in the Black Hills to search for gold, and residents have submitted 1,744 comments worried about water, wildlife, and cultural sites—while the Forest Service reviews if an environmental study is needed before any permits are granted.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rapid City Council approved a $337 million budget for 2026—making a small change to the funds for the America 250 celebration—planned for the nation’s 250th birthday.  Rapid City Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Black Hills Regional Eye Institute in Rapid City reported a cyberattack that exposed patient and billing data when an unauthorized party accessed its systems between Jan. 4 and Jan. 8, 2025; the institute investigated the breach, secured its network, and began notifying patients on Aug. 29 (offering complimentary credit monitoring for those with compromised Social Security numbers).  KBHB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jayda Reinert won her second consecutive barrel racing title at the Mid-Plains Community College Stampede, clocking 18.05 seconds for 145 points as her Black Hills State University team finished second overall with 271 points. The victory came after a weekend of rodeo events that also saw her teammates place sixth at Wild West Arena.  KBHB
