CULTURE NEWS

  • South Dakota does not offer film incentives, which pushes many filmmakers to shoot in states with strong tax credit programs; producer Steve Rausch said movies set here, like Americana, may not capture true local scenery + studios consider alternative strategies to boost local production.  South Dakota News Watch
  • South Dakota has been the home for many iconic movies—Dances With Wolves, National Treasure, Thunderheart, Incident at Oglala, The Rider, and Nomadland—that used our unique landscapes and local stories. Visitors can see film set pieces and museums in western South Dakota that honor this rich movie heritage.  South Dakota News Watch

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Supporters and opponents of Libertyland are making their voices heard in Rapid City as a 125-million-dollar TIF-funded proposal—including a theme park, resort hotel, and shopping center—moves forward; some residents are circulating petitions with about 2,600 signatures needed by September 26 while Mayor Jason Salamon urges everyone to learn more and weigh in thoughtfully.  KBHB
  • Today, the City of Sturgis and Meade County are finalizing a Memorandum of Agreement to transfer portions of county roadways to the city in compliance with a new law that assigns secondary highways to municipalities. The county will handle scheduled maintenance—snow removal on through roads and ditch mowing—until 2026 when Sturgis assumes full responsibility.  KBHB

  • Rapid City Stevens and St Thomas More led the team leaderboard at the Spearfish Invitational on Tuesday as both teams carded the lowest score. Hayden Heig of St Thomas More won the individual title with a 76—Cole Jansen of Stevens finished one stroke behind.  KBHB
